Celebrating 30 Years

30 Year Update

Newman Wetlands Center opened to the public on October 20, 1995. Over the last 30 years, more than 400,000 guests from across the world have explored the trails, learned with staff, watched wildlife, and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. NWC has provided exceptional outdoor learning opportunities to people of all ages, combining experience, place, and emergent learning into hands-dirty sessions. Participants often leave with core memories, whether they held their first salamander, faced their fear of dragonflies, walked over a creek on a downed log, or simply had a great time. The photo gallery below features some of our favorite moments from the past 30 years.

From 2021 to 2025, NWC earned $228,425 in grant funds from the Clayton County Tourism Authority and the David, Helen and Marian Woodward Fund. Funds were used to enhance the visitor experience by adding new opportunities, such as the Marsh Memoirs multi-media hiking app and We Are Water Weekend. Funds were also used to improve access to all through an accessibility audit and the purchase of an Action Trackchair. In 2025, NWC won a GAWP Excellence in Community Engagement award for the annual Wetlands & Watershed Festival.
