Mother: Sisterhood in the Wild Screening and Panel Discussion
**Brunch is FULL, but come out to the screening. It begins at 11 a.m.
Saturday, Feb. 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Mother: Sisterhood in the Wild is “an emotional documentary of an arduous expedition set in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Mother is a testament to the majesty of Mother Nature in contrast to newly discovered friendship, survival, the resilience of the human spirit, and the raw power of SISTERHOOD.”
Join us at 10 a.m. for brunch from Sumthin’ Fa Brunch. We’ll commune and enjoy delicious food. This will be followed by an 11 a.m. screening of Mother: Sisterhood in the Wild and a panel discussion featuring filmmaker Chad Brown and cast members Danica Carey and Erica Nelson.
Introduction to Kayaking (REGISTRATION FULL)
Saturday, Feb. 7, 2 to 5 p.m.
Join us for an introductory paddle on Shamrock Reservoir led by Ocmulgee Outdoor Expeditions. We will learn the basics of paddling safety, how to enter and exit a kayak, and then paddle the reservoir, admiring birds and aquatic mammals. This is the perfect opportunity for individuals who have never kayaked before to learn in a safe, welcoming environment. Kayaks, paddles, and life jackets will be provided. Bring your own sun protection, water, and the appropriate gear for the weather. Children must be able to wear the child-size life jacket to participate. Limited tandem boats available.
Camping Cuisine Demo (REGISTRATION FULL)
Saturday, Feb. 7, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Nick and Amanda Brooks of Outdoor Gear and Beer will provide a live cooking demo, and provide dinner for participants. Check out their favorite cooking gear, storage ideas, and more while enjoying a tasty meal on the shore of Blalock Reservoir. Whether you’ve never camped or you are an experienced camper looking for new meal ideas, this event is for you. Menu updates to come!
Sunrise with the Blackbirds
Sunday, Feb. 8, 6:45 – 8:30 a.m.
Each winter morning, hundreds of thousands of Blackbirds wake and begin stirring in their cattail and bullrush roosts on CCWA’s constructed treatment wetlands. Join our Conservation staff to watch as these birds take flight, along with hundreds of waterfowl and wading birds. Participants will explore the treatment wetlands by car and on foot. We will likely see Bald Eagles with their nestlings and hear Sora calling from the reeds. We’ll watch Double-crested Cormorants and Great Egrets forage in the ponds. We might even see a family of otters swim by!
Fly Fishing Casting Instructional (REGISTRATION FULL)
Sunday, Feb. 8, 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
River Through Atlanta‘s Captain Chris Scalley will lead participants through an introduction to the art of casting. This is not a fishing experience, but instead, a class on casting techniques. Learn new or improve on old techniques while enjoying the views of Blalock Reservoir. Participants will alternate, having the opportunity to rest between practice rounds.
From Spring to River Bus Tour (REGISTRATION FULL)
Sunday, Feb. 8, 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Hannah Palmer, author of The Pool is Closed, science communicator, and creator of Finding the Flint, will lead a bus tour highlighting the water resources and related human history in Clayton County.
